One of these projects was the Civic Centre, located on Playford Boulevard in the Elizabeth Regional Centre Precinct. Four tanks with a total capacity of 45,000 litres are installed in the under croft of the building. This water is used specifically to service 24 quick recovery mains flush valve cisterns servicing the toilets, located throughout the amenities within the site.

The original system was a manually operated system that required close monitoring from the operational manager of the site which created a number of issues. Also there were several maintenance issues regarding the quality of the water filling the flush valves. During discussions with Michael from Rice Plumbing Pty Ltd it was suggested that a system that would value add to the work already in place and reduce any risk of water supply failure would be desirable. The works consisted of:
* Incorporating a first flush system, this allows debris and sediment from the roof and gutter that accumulates in the Storm Water Pipe work to be flushed before entering the Rain Water harvesting tanks automatically.

* Installation of water level sensors to tanks.

* Installation of solenoid changeover valves to swap from Mains Water to Harvested Water. This is operated and measured by the Civic Centre's Building Management System.

* The daily consumption of harvested rainwater is approximately 1520 litres per working day but can fluctuate quite dramatically when functions are held at the centre.
Eco Smart Plumbing Enhancing Existing Systems

The City of
Playford has demonstrated a significant commitment to water harvesting of their main water ways through wetland and Aquifer Storage Transfer and Recovery projects. Community and Civic buildings also have had Environmentally Sustainable Development principles applied to ensure that they are sustainable.

These types of initiatives from Michael at Rice Plumbing Pty Ltd helped build a strong partnership between the two parties and is the catalyst for the way that Michael's company addresses other sites within council, either new works or repairs and maintenance to existing buildings, and as a result of these works council are ensuring that they use their natural resources as efficiently as possible to ensure a sustainable environment for the future.

The product knowledge and adoption of Eco Smart Plumbing by Michael, reflects the contribution the plumbing industry is making to ensure that Local Government meet their environmental targets.
